Although both authors spoke publicly about the outline for the novel, no public readings of any material were given something which Pratchett frequently did at Discworld conventions. The "Long Earth" is a name given to a possibly infinite series of parallel worlds that are similar to Earth, which can be reached by using an inexpensive device called a "Stepper". The "close" worlds are almost identical to "our" Earth referred to as "Datum Earth" , while others differ in greater and greater details.

Sometimes we hear this from characters who pop up and are not heard of again, giving the book a disjointed feel. Of the hundreds of thousands of Earths open to Joe Public almost all are Earth as it would have been without us.

A lot of time is spent hopping from one forest world to the next. The writing, line by line, is fine. It lacks trade-mark Pratchett sharpness but it does the job. The story arching over chapters is.
I hope he keeps doing it. I cannot though, hand on heart say I enjoyed this book.Have read the books but still have an issue with iron transportable problem.
The Long Earth
The book doesn't focus on a single person, showing us the experiences of a half-dozen or so, and headhops through a bunch more, but the primary character is Joshua, one of the first to hop, and also a natural hopper, able to travel without the device.
I was prepared for a bit of that here, but it is very toned down.
