This is a full bilingual vocabulary list of "Cambridge Vocabulary for IELTS". I advice the book was of great benefit to me in the way towards conquering the IELTS.

Listen or read and try to guess what they mean from the context. This step is very important because it will help you remember them. Note the 15 new words down in your notebook. Look up the new words in a dictionary.

You can do this online. Beside each word note the meaning, an example sentence or two, collocations, synonyms, antonyms, and pronunciation. You can also draw pictures; whatever will help you remember the word.

IELTS Vocabulary: Why is it important?

Review the new words after one week, two weeks and then one month. Also, practice using the new words in a sentence.

If you do this five days a week, after a month you will have nearly new words in your notebook.

After 6 months you will have at least new words. The human mind can only effectively remember around 15 new words in a foreign language per day, so any more and you will not learn them properly and make mistakes.

Improving your vocabulary and spelling

This method is the single most powerful way I know for learning vocabulary and lots of my students have been successful with it. Online Sources of Information I know that many of you, like me, live in countries where there are not many good English bookshops.

However, there are lots of online sources that you can use. The great thing about them is you can choose exactly what you want and never get bored. In addition, at the end of each unit, there is a section from an IELTS practice test that focuses on the same topic as the unit.

I have worked on the IELTS test since , so I have a good working knowledge of all parts of the test as well as the type of vocabulary that will feature in the test. The book helps you increase your receptive or passive vocabulary, so you can understand more in the listening and reading sections of the test, but it also highlights your active vocabulary the vocabulary you produce in the writing and speaking tests so that you can write and speak more fluently and more accurately.

Rather than simply giving you lists of words or phrases to learn, the book helps you to practice key words in the context of IELTS materials.

This means that you also learn how to apply approach vocabulary problems in the real test. For example, you will learn recognise synonyms of the words you are learning, which is important for both the reading and listening tests.

In speaking and writing, you will learn about accuracy and using the right form, as well as the correct collocations.

There is also a focus on correct spelling and pronunciation. If you are learning vocabulary from free materials and videos, then you are likely to be learning words that are not relevant to the real test.
